**RESPONSIBILITIES**
Within BASF Seed and Traits R&D, biochemistry refers to the analysis of biochemical properties of proteins, cells, and tissues samples. The Biochemistry group in Trait Research analyzes metabolites and performs protein design approaches using detailed knowledge of the protein structure and function to develop novel trait recipes and/or leads. Biochemistry is embedded in a research department that focuses on trait discovery, engineering and evaluation. For the Biochemistry group in our R&D Innovation Center in Gent (Belgium) we are looking for a pragmatic, enthusiastic and inspiring Scientist.

This is what you can expect:

- In this role you will be part of our Biochemistry group and support delivering on R&D projects at a competitive cost, speed and quality.
- You will hands-on contribute to, and manage, coach and support research teams in the design and implementation of experimental approaches in line with the research operational plan mainly in the (protein) biochemistry domain.
- You will critically evaluate outcomes of experimental approaches and revise research plans as appropriate.
- You will report progress in relation to critical milestones to all relevant stakeholders within the Function.
- As a Biochemistry Scientist, you will proactively acquire, maintain and share relevant scientific networks and information within the team.
- You will develop competitive research programs using state-of-the-art know-how and technology to translate business objectives into innovative and cost-effective research plans.
- You achieve this with critical milestones leading to a desired trait, germplasm or enabling technology.
- You will propose feasible, innovative methodology concepts in your area of expertise.
- You will scout, develop and communicate ideas for novel business and project opportunities.
- You will act as a recognized role model with respect to ensuring the compliance with all existing safety and QMS standards in the area of responsibility.
- You will ensure confidentiality and protection of competitive know-how.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
This is what we expect:

- PhD with at least 3 years of successful experience in biological sciences research or equivalent.
- Proficient and broad knowledge in protein chemistry is a must, such as protein production, purification, enzyme assays.
- Experience with plant biochemistry is a plus
- Experience with plants is a plus
- Experience with Mass Spectroscopy, both operation and assay development is a plus
- Proficient knowledge in the field of protein engineering via rational protein design and/or directed evolution is a strong plus
- An innovative mindset to develop and implement innovative research approaches, including novel technologies
- Experience in operating in various, multi-year research programs
- Providing scientific leadership on multiple internal and external program work packages, including leadership over external collaborations
- Good people skills
- Demonstrated pro-activity
- Clear communication skills and proficient in English
- Experience in proposing and managing research projects
- Leadership skills and multi-cultural mindset
