**Principal, Corporate Operational Risk**
Based in the European Bank Brussels and will have a dual reporting line into, the EMEA Head of Operational Risk for Markets, Clearance and Collateral Manager, Corporate Treasury, Treasury Services and Global Payments and Treasury Services Operations, and the European Bank Head of Operational Risk. Both teams are part of the bank’s 2 nd Line of Defence Model for the operational risk discipline. The role is part of a global team of operational risk professionals who support the above businesses and the LB and EB branches with a particular focus on CCM International Collateral Management and International Clearance.
Responsible for the ongoing independent oversight of first line day-to-day operational risk management activities.
Advises and provides oversight to the first line's identification, assessment, monitoring, risk exposure remediation and reporting of the business's operational risk exposure.
Uses a high level of knowledge of standard and non-standard risks to appropriately direct the business line's activities to address any control gaps.
Uses strong familiarity with the assigned business line in order to provide oversight of, consultation on and challenge of first line risk management practices that may have potentially broad consequences across other areas of the organization.
This position will require regular communication and collaboration with different Risk teams across Legal Entities and geographies, as well as with stakeholders including Operations, Internal Control, Compliance, Finance, Audit and Legal
Promotes a strong risk awareness culture within the above EMEA line of businesses and LE’s.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Directs the assigned business unit's compliance with the enterprise-wide Corporate Operational Risk Management framework by overseeing the identification, assessment and mitigation of risks, identifying emerging issues, contributing to the development of processes and controls to manage operational risks, monitoring the adequacy and effectiveness of the control environment, overseeing deficiency remediation, monitoring and challenging business activities and enforcing business line awareness of and adherence to the operational risk management framework.
- Review and challenge 1LoD self-assessment in the context of the circular NBB_2011_ 09 (Report of the Senior Management on the assessment of the Internal Control).
- Production of Operational Risk Reporting for Senior Management and Governance Committees in the line of business and legal entities as it relates to the oversight of EMEA business lines above and the implementation of the risk management framework within the businesses. Provide assistance on any regulatory request including support for answering operational risk related questions from the regulator or supervisor.
- Oversees the first line's appropriate maintenance of operational risk framework tools (eg the RCSA and HLA) and timely reporting of significant events including losses events and near misses. Participates in and provides challenge to the first line's scenario analysis. Uses growing influence with business line management to ensure the completion of risk assessments in the event of change, identification of a potential adverse impact, new product offering, business process change, profit loss or adverse audit or examiner finding.
- Uses working relationships with the Risk Management, Compliance and Audit teams and members of the business line to ensure timely completion of operational risk-related deliverables, issue resolution and operational loss estimation and remediation. Responsible for appropriately escalating issues to both functional and entity risk and business management when risk exposure is deemed to be increasing.
- No direct reports; provides guidance to more junior team members.
- Contributes to the achievement of team objectives.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Professional operational risk management qualification preferred.
- 10-12 years of total work experience preferred.
- Experience of operational risk management in an established financial services or investment management organization.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Robust interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Sound knowledge of one or more of the following business areas, Collateral Management, Clearance, Global Custody, Internal Control, Operations, Payments.
- Understanding of the trade lifecycle and key processes and controls
