**Context**

The European Climate Foundation (ECF) provides funds, direction and advice to about 1000 partner organisations which lead the fight against Climate Change in Europe, Africa and parts of Asia. It coordinates Climate Change strategies across the fields of energy, industry, transport, land use and international politics. Its partners are very varied, using research, advocacy and political engagement, strategic communications, legal action and public campaigning amongst other tools to achieve their objectives. With the support of its major philanthropic funders, ECFs income has doubled in three years and is expected to continue to grow rapidly; it is now an organisation of nearly 250 people.

As a prominent funder and thought leader, ECF has always played a hugely important role in developing new NGOs and partners in the fields in which it operates. As it enters new areas of work and steps up activity in established ones while operating in an increasingly volatile political and economic environment, the importance of the organisational health of grantee partners becomes ever more critical. The general theory of change for organisational development is simple: Improved capacities of civil society organisations will make them more resilient to shocks, more adaptive to change. They will therefore be more effective in their mission and it will eventually lead to increased and longer term impact

**Position**:
ECF is currently finalising a strategy for how it supports capacity and resilience of its grantee partners (‘organisational development strategy’). This includes aspect of how it makes grants, how it supports the highest partners development and how it strengthens the field generally, including providing non-financial services, talent development, promoting new organisations,... ECF wishes to recruit an Organisational Development (OD) Director who can enable delivery of ECF’s strategic objectives and the work of Programme Teams by:

- Refining the new OD strategy, in partnership with Programme Directors and Executive Directors.
- Driving the new OD strategy, including monitoring its impact and correcting course where necessary, taking accountability for its implementation.
- Developing and sharing best practices in Organisational Development and embedding these in the Programme Teams, working with grantee partner leadership and Programme Directors and Officers.
- Leading or coordinating specific initiatives to deliver the strategy, under the sponsorship of ECF Executive Directors.
- Coordinating ECF OD efforts with those of other funders and partners
- Developing DEI in our grantee network
- Overseeing the OD budget which is built in partnership with Programme Directors and Executive Directors.

This is a very central and strategic position given ECF future developments around its role as network enabler. The OD Lead will report to the Chief Operating Office.

**Requirements**:
The OD lead will be expected to have:
1. Significant practical experience of OD work, including leading change and skills development programmes in small and medium sized organisations, working in the non-profit space or both the business and non-profit sectors.

2. Understanding of grant-making strategies and the operational issues facing small and medium scale non-profit organisations, ideally acquired through first-hand experience, or the demonstrable potential and interest to acquire that understanding very rapidly.

3. Coaching and listening skills sufficient to work effectively with CEOs of partner organisations and their teams, as well as ECF Directors, Executive Directors and Programme Officers.

5. Gravitas to influence senior colleagues across ECF and to represent ECF with major funders and philanthropic partners.

6. Drive, resilience and ambition to lead the start-up of a new function within a fast-changing organisation.

7. Ability to think strategically while dealing volatile conditions; focussing on the vision for the function while refining and adjusting the OD strategy and approach where necessary to achieve ECFs overall objectives.

8. Cultural awareness to operate internationally in the non-profit sector at a senior level.

9. Experience of leading international teams.

10. Interest in and experience of developing managers, analysts and administrative staff.

11. Commitment and enthusiasm for the ECF’s work.
