The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) strives to advance science and health for all, through innovative research, advanced education, capacity-building and capacity-sharing with partner institutions in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Within ITM, the Department of Public Health (DPH) aims to improve the understanding of interlinked determinants of population health, including system-level, sociocultural, ecological and biological factors; to develop, implement and evaluate interventions that support and strengthen health of individuals and communities; and to co-create knowledge and capacity to contextualise, prevent, detect and adapt to local and global health challenges and threats.
The education coordinator is the head of the Education Unit, which is responsible for the development, implementation and quality assurance of all education programmes organised by the department. The Education Unit includes the head, the course coordinator of the Master in Public Health, the course coordinator of the Postgraduate Certificate programmes, and a teaching and learning expert. The education coordinator works closely with the programme directors and the course coordination teams, manages the staff of the course secretariats, and collaborates with the staff of ITM’s Education Office and the education coordinators of the Clinical and Biomedical Sciences departments. The education coordinator reports to the head of the DPH.
**Assignment**
The assignment covers the following domains:
- Education unit management_
- You lead and manage the Education Unit of the DPH.
- You monitor and report on education activities, output and impact.
- You participate in the MPH and Postgraduate coordination team meetings organised by the course coordinators.
- You organise meetings with the course steering groups in collaboration with the course coordinators.
- You supervise the teaching and learning expert and contribute to the development and implementation of appropriate teaching methods and tools, including the learning management system.
- You supervise the educational support staff (course secretariats) and support the harmonisation of educational operational and administrative processes across ITM.
- You contribute to the development and implementation of marketing strategies for education at ITM.
- You contribute to alumni network initiatives in collaboration with the ITM alumni coordinator.
- Departmental education policy_
- You develop the departmental strategic plans and action plans on education.
- You contribute to curriculum development and implementation of the education programmes of the department.
- You ensure the alignment of new initiatives with the departmental education strategy.
- You co-develop a professional development strategy for departmental staff involved in education and support its implementation.
- You stimulate and support collaborative educational initiatives with global partners.
- You oversee quality assurance and (re-)accreditation processes of education at departmental level.
- You oversee the management of the departmental education budget.
- You represent the Education Unit in the departmental council and the DPH in the Education Policy Committee, the Academic Council, the bodies Desk for Education Support and Coordination (DESC), and Alliance coordination team.
- Supervision of course organisation_
- You oversee the planning of the academic calendar for the department.
- You coordinate student selection and the assignment of fellowships for the courses and programmes of the department.
- Additional tasks_
- You inform and guide students on the educational offer and possible study trajectories.
- You take up coordination tasks for a number of (advanced) course components/short courses related to the MPH or the Postgraduate Certificate programmes.
- You contribute to teaching, coaching and assessment in function of your expertise and interest.
- You can contribute to research and capacity strengthening activities of the DPH, up to 30% of your time.
- You have a Master’s degree in Public Health or equivalent.
- A certificate in education is an asset.
- You have at least 5 years of working experience in postgraduate education, including teaching, coaching, assessment and course management.
- You have experience with quality assurance processes in education.
- You have research and field experience in public health domains, including in low resource settings.
- You have excellent networking, communication and writing skills.
- You have strong leadership and social skills.
- You can work autonomously and in a team.
- You are committed to high standards of quality, integrity and partnership.
- You are proficient in English, French and Dutch. Other languages such as Spanish are an asset.
