**RESPONSIBILITIES**
Within BASF Seed and Traits R&D, plant cultivation refers to the growth of plants and the production of quality seeds in greenhouses and growth chambers. The Plant Cultivation group in Trait Research grows plants for crops such as wheat, soybean, oilseed rape and cotton, and produces and ships high quality seeds for further evaluation in the greenhouse or in the field. The group operates and carries this responsibility at multiple locations around Gent.
Plant Cultivation aims at being highly experienced and predictable in workflow-based operational organization towards mínimal cost and timelines, while also ensuring required quality, both at the level of purity as well as at the level of Plant Genetic Integrity. Plant Cultivation also aims at being state-of-the-art by identifying, developing, and implementing the latest technology and infrastructure.
Plant Cultivation is embedded in a research department that focuses on trait design, creation, and testing, and supports the testing of genetic engineering, genome editing and mutagenesis-based traits.
For the Plant Cultivation group in our R&D Innovation Center in Gent (Belgium) we are looking for a hands-on, pragmatic and enthusiastic Junior Greenhouse Support Manager.
What you can expect:
- In this role you will be part of our Plant Cultivation group and support delivering on R&D projects at a competitive cost, speed, and quality.
- NOTE: A Junior Greenhouse Support Manager will perform below tasks under supervision of a (Senior) Greenhouse Support Manager.
- You will plan and manage the available space (greenhouse compartments, growth chambers, seed stocks) for Trait Research and Regulatory Science in Zwijnaarde II, in compliance with BioSafety and Stewardship requirements.
- You will manage the automatic climate control and water supply for the greenhouse compartments and growth chambers in close cooperation with the greenhouse staff. You will monitor the settings and actual conditions.
- You will stay up to date with the newest developments in greenhouse technology and management and test and implement improvements and innovation in house.
- You will monitor plant pests and diseases; analyze cultivation problems and perform troubleshooting in close cooperation with the greenhouse staff and greenhouse management.
- You have knowledge on Integrated Pest Management principles and practices, on pesticides (relevant safety and legal requirements) and the correct use of related equipment.
- You will maintain records and inventories of pesticides.
- You will manage the stock of greenhouse consumables (gather the needs, place the orders at purchase, serve as contact person for Facility Management)
- You will ensure the manual watering during weekends and holidays
- You will advise your supervisor in specific areas of technical expertise.
- You will ensure the compliance with all existing QHSE standards in the area of responsibility taking into account laws, regulations and directives and evaluate potential risks of the research activities.
- You give input to Site Biosafety Manager and Prevention Advisor.
- You support the development or update of QHSE procedures and documents and ensure compliance in the greenhouse.
- Together with colleagues, you will be highly involved in workflow-based operations, especially for genome editing and transgenesis in different crops (Oilseed rape, Cotton, Soybean).
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- You have a master's degree in Life Sciences, preferentially horticulture, agriculture or biotechnology (or equivalent through experience), with at least 5 years of experience in relevant aspects of plant cultivation.
- You hold a Phytolicence P2 (or you are willing to obtain this on a short term by external training)
- In your field of expertise, you are able to keep abreast of new developments, and convert these into technical innovation plans and expertise innovation strategy contributions.
- You have basic knowledge and understanding of technical aspects of greenhouse research and greenhouse management
- You have knowledge of plant growth under controlled environments
- You have knowledge of plant pathology and chemical and biological pest control
- You have knowledge of automated greenhouse control systems
- You are service-minded, flexible, open and adaptable to changing environment
- You have a pro-active attitude
- You have effective communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written English
