De **Vrije Universiteit Brussel** staat al meer dan 50 jaar voor **vrijheid, gelijk(waardig)heid en verbondenheid** en dat leeft sterk op onze campussen bij zowel studenten als personeel. Bij de VUB vind je een diverse verzameling aan persoonlijkheden: innovators pur sang, maar vooral **mensen die 100% hun authentieke zelf zijn**. Met zo'n **3500 medewerkers** zijn we de **grootste Nederlandstalige werkgever, in de privésector, in Brussel;** een internationale stad waarmee we ons maar al te graag verbinden en waar(rond) onze 4 campussen gelegen zijn.
Ons onderwijs en onderzoek zijn gegrond op het beginsel van **vrij onderzoek** met het oog op de vooruitgang van de mensheid. We verwerpen elk louter gezagsargument en waarborgen de vrije oordeelsvorming die nodig is voor de maatschappelijke inschakeling van dit basisbeginsel.
De VUB is autonoom en wordt **democratisch **beheerd. Daarmee waarborgen we het uitoefenen van de fundamentele vrijheden binnen onze universiteit, maar ook het recht van de Universitaire Gemeenschap om deel uit te maken van het beleid van de Universiteit en de controle hierop.
Tot de zending van de Universiteit behoren:
- het ontwikkelen, het overbrengen en het toepassen van een hoogstaand academisch onderwijs en wetenschappelijk onderzoek, vrij van elk vooroordeel;
- de maatschappelijke inschakeling hiervan in een geest van sociale bewogenheid;
- de kritische vorming van iedereen in het licht van de in de gemeenschap te dragen verantwoordelijkheid.
**2 - Functie**:
Momenteel zijn we voor het **Zelfstandig Academisch Personeel** van de **Faculteit Geneeskunde en Farmacie**, vakgroep **Farmaceutische en Farmacologische Wetenschappen**, op zoek naar een **voltijds professor**.
Meer concreet zal je takenpakket er als volgt uitzien:
**Onderwijs
- en onderzoeksdomein**:
Ontrafelen van oorzaken van autonoom zenuwstelsel disfuncties als basis voor ontwikkeling van nieuwe farmacologische behandelingsstrategieën voor ziekten van het centrale zenuwstelsel, met een focus op psychiatrische aandoeningen
**Onderwijsopdracht**:
- Je zal bijdragen aan het onderwijs in de experimentele moleculaire en cellulaire biologie, algemene fysiologie, en translationele neurowetenschappen (e.g. nieuwe therapeutische strategieën voor ziekten van het centrale zenuwstelsel) voor studenten in de (bio)medische wetenschappen.
**Onderzoeksopdracht**:
- Je zal wetenschappelijk onderzoek doorvoeren naar de link tussen disregulatie van het autonome zenuwstelsel (AZS) en de gevolgen op orgaanfuncties en de hersenen, met inbegrip van psychiatrische aandoeningen. Een autonome disfunctie treedt op wanneer het AZS, dat de werking van alle menselijke organen mee reguleert en naar homeostase streeft, uit balans geraakt. Genetische oorzaken kunnen ook aan de basis liggen van AZS disfunctie. Recent wetenschappelijk genetisch onderzoek suggereert een intrigerende maar weinig bestudeerde impact van zulke dysregulatie van orthosympathische of parasympathische activiteit op meerdere organen, inclusief de hersenen, met als gevolg beïnvloeding van cognitieve functies en het mentaal welbevinden.
- Jouw onderzoek zal grotendeels kaderen binnen de hypothese dat in patiënten met hersenziekten en psychiatrische aandoeningen de primaire autonome disfunctie de interoceptie moduleert als gevolg van de pathofysiologische afwijkingen in het AZS, en dat het farmacologisch omkeren van de autonome disfunctie de centrale symptomen van de patiënten zal verbeteren. Het experimenteel werk omvat moleculaire biologie en electrofysiologie in cellen en weefsels van wild type en mutante muizen, en gedragsobservaties in muismodellen, hetgeen als basis zal dienen voor de ontwikkeling van innovatieve farmacologische strategieën voor de patiënten. Het betreft translationeel van bedside-to-bench-to-bedside onderzoek.
**Overige taken**:
- Je zal pogen translationeel onderzoek op te zetten met de klinische dienst psychiatrie ter verbetering van moeilijk behandelbare psychiatrische stoornissen, alsook multidisciplinair onderzoek stimuleren met andere onderzoekers van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel en het UZ Brussel.
- Je zal een belangrijke rol spelen in een competitief wetenschappelijk klimaat, door hard te werken en open te communiceren, maar je streeft naar een gezonde, aangename en dynamische werkomgeving.
Voor deze functie zal onze **Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene)** je thuisbasis worden.

Wat verwachten wij van jou?
- Je bent houder van een doctoraatsdiploma in de Farmaceutische Wetenschappen of Medische Wetenschappen.
- Je hebt jouw diploma ten minste 5 jaar voor ingang van het beoogde mandaat behaald.
- Je hebt aantoonbare en uitgebreide internationale ervaring als postdoctoraal onderzoeker of als ZAP lid aan het hoofd van een onderzoeksteam.
